OVERVIEW

Jinx is a trap-based zoner and one of the most technical characters in the game. She shoots missiles, throws traps, and keeps you at a range you do not want to be at. She is not a character you pick up casually — but in the right hands she is devastating.

She has two game plans and you are always running one of them: set up for your teammate, or set up for yourself with traps and stall for resources — meter for supers, and her Zap, which recharges on its own over time.

💡 Stalling is the plan, not cowardice

Time spent not dying is time your Zap comes back. Jinx wins by controlling the pace, so playing patiently is executing her gameplan — not avoiding one.

NEUTRAL & ZONING

Best Buttons

  • Skip her lights. They are bad — do not build anything around them.
  • Mediums are your bread and butter. Long range, and crouching medium is a two-piece: it hits low, then again at mid-range.
  • Heavy is chargeable and causes a crumple — that crumple is what makes trap combos possible.
  • Down-forward light is a slide that covers real distance. Far better than crouching light.
  • Down heavy is her launcher and her main anti-air. Back heavy is a backflip that also anti-airs — and it is the button that interacts with traps.
  • Running medium is a long, meaty slide that combos. Her best approach tool.
  • Crouching forward heavy is her overhead — honestly the worst overhead in the game. Very slow, and it only cancels into down S2.

Specials

  • S2 — rocket. Hold it for 10 more damage and faster travel. The real reason to hold is that the rocket is very parryable on reaction, so varying the release breaks their timing.
  • Down S2 — angleable explosion. Down-back sends it backwards, down-forward sends it forwards. It OTGs, which makes it one of her only ways to extend off a grounded opponent. A strong round-start button going backwards.
  • S1 — minigun. You must hold S1; tapping no longer works. Aim it — aiming up gets more hits and covers the air. Cancel out of it with the rocket, and hold up as it ends to extend it from 12 to 22 bullets.
  • Back S1 is an anti-air minigun, and it cancels into crouching S2 whenever it makes contact (on hit or on block). Throw a trap, then back S1, and you gain space while the trap is still travelling.

TRAPS

Her traps are the actual character. Down S1 throws the monkey trap; forward S1 throws flame chompers, which bounce around and function as a threat people refuse to walk into.

You can only have one of each at a time — but you can have one of both at once. That is the target state: one covering the ground, one covering the air.

You can hit your own traps

  • Heavy knocks the trap forward. Crouching heavy pushes it forward and punts it into the upper lane — think of the screen as having a ground level and an air level.
  • Missiles move it too, and you can launch it then dive-kick it into them.
  • Your assist interacts with it. Call Vi and she will punch the trap forward like a projectile.
  • Ignite it with a medium and it explodes and electrocutes them. Your mediums, crouching medium and Zap all ignite.
  • Hold the flame trap to toss it further. In the corner a held trap bounces off the wall and covers an absurd amount of space.

🎯 The four-piece setup

Throw the down trap and ignite it → cancel into the front trap → minigun aimed upward so the trap flies up and covers the air → missile, which moves the trap again and covers the ground. It chains into a four-hit combo and shuts down every approach angle at once.

“If you can master this setup, it should just simply carry you all the way to Emerald alone.” — TJPuma

Be honest about why it works though: people below Diamond do not know the answer yet. Learn the fundamentals underneath it so you do not hit a wall later.

Start smaller. From full screen: ground trap → backflip → rocket. The backflip puts the rocket at a great height to catch jumps, so they either fall into the trap or eat the rocket. Simpler still: ground trap → ignite → rocket, and anti-air with down heavy.

THE ZAP METER

Hold back + S2. It charges on its own over time and there is no way to speed that up — which is exactly why she is a stall character.

  • It stuns. Land it, slide in, take your combo.
  • It is the strongest projectile in the game. It has so much projectile invulnerability that it goes straight through everything else. If they wind up something unsafe from full screen, Zap it.
  • Since her recent buffs it also goes through wind wall.
  • It ignites your traps, same as your mediums.
  • It rescues dropped confirms — hits you cannot launch from can be continued with a missile into Zap.

CORE COMBOS

Her pulse combos are poor — they just dump you into minigun and super. Unlike most of the cast, Jinx genuinely needs you to learn real routes.

Starter Combos

Button Notation

L Light M Medium H Heavy S1 Special 1 S2 Special 2 T Tag
Out of range:slide MHS1 minigunS2 rocket
Off a tag launch:H2Hcharge H2S2super
Off a forward throw:hold 2S2S1S2trap on landing

Always start with the sliding medium — that is how you land the overwhelming majority of your hits. One real flaw to know: if you are slightly too far and you go heavy into launch, it whiffs. Be careful about spacing before committing.

💡 Low damage is sometimes correct

Some routes end far away and do less damage. That is fine — you are buying distance and a free trap they cannot contest, and with Jinx position plus a live trap is usually worth more than the extra chip.

Block Strings

  • Her standard string — crouching light, medium, minigun, missile — is very parryable at higher levels. Fix it by holding the missile to break their timing, or cancelling the minigun into down S2 instead.
  • Down-forward light into down-forward heavy is a low into a high, and it works far better than it should because they are braced for zoning, not a mixup.
  • Forward throw is the good one — it converts. Back throw does not, so use that time to place another trap instead of chasing.

SETUPS & FUSES

After a grab, throw a trap in front of you and let their option pick their poison: roll toward you and they land in it, roll away and you are plus so throw the other one, wake-up attack and they run into something, do nothing and you are free to interact with the trap yourself.

In the corner, throw the down trap and grab them right before it explodes — the trap makes them think about blocking, so the throw is the last thing they are watching for.

Off the fireworks super, throw traps the instant you land. You can get two out before they touch the ground.

Assists and Limit Strike

  • Her missile assist is one of the best in the game. Her forward trap assist is one of the worst. Use the missile, and puppet your point character while it flies.
  • Do not use her limit strike. The ground pound is the worst in the game — it ends the combo, leaves you airborne with nothing available, and is easy to punish.

Best Fuse

Start on Double Down. Her beam super-tags beautifully with it, and the Vi tech is filthy — anti-air special into Vi super, Double Down back into Jinx, then tag Vi for her super again.

2X Assist has a quirk unique to her: normally only one projectile can be on screen, but with 2X you can fire a second missile before the first connects, and it combos.

TEAM COMPOSITION

Jinx is the best setup character in the game, so pair her with someone who cashes in what she creates.

  • Vi — the classic. Jinx’s missile covers Vi’s approach, and Vi punches Jinx’s traps forward as a pseudo-projectile.
  • Braum — his shield gives Jinx cover when she is forced to approach.
  • Ekko — his mobility plus her trap coverage makes escaping very hard.
